Ireti Kingibe, the Senator for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has responded to remarks made by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who threatened to remove her from office in the 2027 elections.
The tension between Kingibe and Wike has been palpable since they both took on their roles.
During the recent inauguration of the Mabushi Bus Terminal in Abuja, Wike expressed that Kingibe would lose the backing of the capital’s residents come the next general elections. He lamented that instead of working together with the FCT Administration, Kingibe seemed upset that citizens were expressing support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Wike even suggested that if she was dissatisfied with his performance, she should “hang herself on a transformer.” In her response, Kingibe asserted that Wike lacks an understanding of leadership within the FCT and emphasized that he should address her with more respect.
In an interview on Channels TV’s Political Paradigm, she stated that Wike owes her an apology, given their age difference. She remarked, “He clearly doesn’t grasp the essence of the FCT. This isn’t personal. He claims he doesn’t want to be my friend, but governance isn’t about friendship. I’m open to collaborating with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, but he must apologize first for his inappropriate comments. Once that happens, we can move forward, but until then, we each have our roles to play. With all due respect, I am significantly older than him, and common courtesy dictates that he should treat me accordingly.”
